If you were to Google the meaning of “meat & potatoes” you would get some answers such as:
“ordinary but fundamental things; basic ingredients” (Google dictionary) or
“of fundamental importance
:unpretentious, simple a real meat-and-potatoes guy
:providing or preferring simple food (such as meat and potatoes)” (Merriam-Webster.com)
Today in modern western culture we are inundated with so many options when it comes to nutrition. It can be overwhelming with the amount of marketing and advertising we see everyday about the food that we are told we should or shouldn’t eat. Hyper-palatable manufactured food is around us everywhere we turn and is thrown in our faces about how delicious and cheap it is. But what if this is not the way we were meant to eat? What if these foods have been hijacking our bodies for decades? The idea of Meat & Potatoes Coaching is to get back to basics. Becoming healthier, getting into better shape or losing weight does not have to be that complicated. Making progress toward these goals doesn’t need to involve some complicated diet that has to be followed strictly or require some exotic superfood from halfway around the world. It can be as simple as getting back to the way foods were originally intended - in their simplest form - whole natural foods. Something more reminiscent of how Grandma used to cook. I remember when I was growing up going to my Grandmom’s house for dinner and food was simple. There was usually some kind of meat, a vegetable and potatoes. A lot of it from their own garden and the butcher. Today we have so many convenience foods that are supposed to make our lives better but really don’t. They are not helping us at all.
The philosophy of Meat & Potatoes Coaching is to not overcomplicate nutrition but get back to basics. Keep food simple. Keep the nutrition simple. Realistically though, I understand that change is not easy. That is why 90% of people who lose weight put it back on. Oftentimes, the reason for this is that they go on an extreme diet that does not even closely resemble how they eat on a normal basis and doesn’t include foods that they like to eat. So they eventually get tired of this diet or reach their goal and go back to the way they used to eat. They have not made any sort of life-long changes. As I said before, change is not easy and making too many at once usually doesn’t stick. That is why we propose a different strategy. Make small gradual changes. The goal of Meat & Potatoes Coaching is to teach you how to make effective and strategic changes that you can sustain for the rest of your life without having to give up the foods that you love.
